What is the Year of the Outback?
It is a year for all Australians to focus undivided attention on regional Australia. It will also be a year to celebrate what we have and what it means to our future.
Over the past 5 years or so, it's fair to say that there has been a decline in a number of our regional areas with services closing down (like banks) and populations declining which has generally lead to an general economic down slide. 2002 is designed to shift the momentum back towards regional Australia.
The year will showcase many events and activities and, in doing so, demonstrate that the Outback not only represents an ageless past but also holds the key to the nation's future.
The Year of the Outback is about Australias future as a nation. It is about the freeing of the quintessential Spirit of the Outback so it touches every Australian and every International visitor, giving them a genuine understanding of the uniqueness and potential of the Australian Outback.
In West Australia, the focus is clearly on the many diverse regional areas of the state, wherever they are located from the leafy South West to the vast and rugged Kimberley they are all included.
Author Jocelyn Burt possibly best summed it up when she said "There is no specific boundary to the Outback: some even say it begins and ends in our minds." How true!
